Pūheke River Rimu | Shannon Turuwhenua

This striking wood sculpture, titled "Pūheke," embodies its name's meaning of 'flow'.

 Handcrafted by North Waikato wood sculptor Shannon Turuwhenua, who is part of the Whanau based collective Past Present Future, this piece is a beautiful example of her art.

 Shannon creates art from native and exotic timbers from around the country, which are reclaimed and recycled where possible.

The sculpture has an elegant, tapered form with a natural, live edge and is powerfully bound at the top with a dark, intricate lashing.

Each piece is handcrafted, and as a result no two pieces are exactly the same.

Shannon takes inspiration from objects in daily life, recreating them into larger pieces of art.
